- HOW DID YOU EXPERIENCE DEMOCRACY?
Children write on paper about problems, things they´re thankful for, successes- constructive communication in groups. Everyone has a chance to contribute and show their emotions. Democracy, literacy, parental involvement, community are all integrated together. There is collaboration between children and teachers. There is lots of communication, discussions, sharing opinions, lots of activity all the time. “Democracy in the making” – there is integration and methods and preparation for being a part of all parts of society.
- HOW DID YOU EXPERIENCE LITERACY?
Children were listening, reading, singing, understanding reading comprehension. The children were working at becoming responsible citizens. They were studying punctuation and working with computer activities, and math. The rooms had interactive blackboards, computers. There are lots of books in the kindergarten, maybe more than necessary.
- WHAT CAUGHT YOUR ATTENTION REGARDING THE TEACHER´S ROLE?
Teachers help the children but it is a problem that they give children controlled time. Teachers volunteer in their free time. Teacher´s role is planning, interacting, preparation, observing, and discussing in the end how everything went with the volunteers. Sometimes their role is doing nothing and observing. It could be stressful for some students when teachers put them on the spot and pressure them to answer questions.
- WHAT CAUGHT YOUR ATTENTION REGARDING THE CHILDREN´S ROLE?
Children didn´t get to choose the exercises they did. There was teamwork, small teams, activity, and responsibility. Children teach to each other. They have different nationalities in the classroom. They want to prepare students to be part of society. There are 25 students to 1 teacher, which is a very high ratio. Interactive groups had a lot of noise and children being distracted.
- IS THERE A PARENT´S INTERVENTION NEEDED?
6.HOW COULD PARENTS BE INVOLVED (OR MORE INVOLVED IF THEY ALREADY ARE)?
Parents come in to school sometimes. Parents do school activities at home with children. Not only parents, also university students and community members participated in the school. There is lots of collaboration between parents, teachers, and students. Parents welcomed by teachers and have an important role in the community.
